It recently came to our attention that the actress who played Janice from Friends, Maggie Wheeler, does't actually sound like her character in real life.
Wheeler has been interviewed on several shows about her role in Friends, and has been sharing some wonderful insights about the beloved sitcom.
Speaking to Cosmopolitan, Wheeler revealed one of what we can imagine were many moments where the cast couldn't quite keep it together.
In the season 3 episode The One With The Giant Poking Device, Chandler finds out his girlfriend Janice has been seeing her ex-husband behind his back.
“Chandler discovers that I've been fooling around with my ex-husband and I'm breathing into a paper bag,” Wheeler said. “I'm hyperventilating and we had rehearsed it many times, and every time he would just grab the bag gently and the air would just exit it.”
But when they filmed the scene in front of the live audience, it didn't quite work out like that.
“The adrenaline was pumping and we were in the middle of the scene,” she recalled, “and he was like 'do you love him?' – yes – 'do you love me?' – yes – and he just grabbed the bag with more force than he had in any rehearsal and it popped. By the grace of God I was able to hide my face in the bag, but you can see if you look at it, he almost cracks up.”
Watch the scene for yourself to see it in all its glory [around 1 minute 10 seconds].
