Gyms are expensive and in many cities still closed, which leaves you struggling to stay in shape during a time when our mental and physical health are under tremendous strain. To help with this, we talked to several fitness experts and personal trainers to find out more about what type of products and routines we can integrate into our homebound workouts.
Some of those tips included common sense direction, such as that of Nezar Akeel, Founder and CEO of MAXPRO Fitness, and holistic health coach from the company Sabrina Wescott. “Set realistic goals based on prior workouts,” they told us. “If you normally do 30 minutes of cardio at the gym, you can still do 30 minutes of cardio at home. The same goes for strength training. If you want to take your workout to the next level, increase your weights for the first few reps and then back off of the last few. For cardio, push yourself by adding increments of 2-5 minutes per day.”
That may seem like a no-brainer, but other impediments to your fitness journey will arise and it’s important to know how to stop them whether they manifest as mental blocks or something more tangible. “Don't 'wait' around for the best time to work out. It is important for your success to schedule time to work out at home, just like you would do when physically going to the gym. If kids are home and you are having a hard time finding time, include the kids in your workout routine.”

Another great suggestion from Debra comes in the form of a rebounder, aka a mini-trampoline you can set up at home and use while watching TV, listening to music, or just spacing out to clear your head for a bit. “Jumpsport makes several versions for those who can’t get outside, use a treadmill, or can’t do higher impact exercise. ” she explains, “It boosts your lymphatic system (immune boosting) and most find it fun!” Many cheaper options are available but have a tendency to droop or sag depending on how often they’re used, so if you plan to be bouncing quite a bit, it’s worthwhile to invest a bit more money for a sturdy version.

You don’t need much space for it either, unless you have low ceilings or a narrow living space, in which case you may want to run outside for a few minutes and find a quiet spot where you can breathe the fresh air and skip ‘til you sweat, then run back in for the rest of your session. It's also easily transportable and will fit easily into a suitcase or carry-on should you be a frequent traveler.
