The Jacket Maker: Find your dream coat or create your own
The Jacket Maker

I initially heard from The Jacket Maker when putting inquiring about plus-size clothing stores as I wrote this piece. Their representative, the kind and charming Mehmood Hanif, reached out to let me know that while not an exculsively plus size store, the company was able to create outerwear in any size, style, or aesthetic, and my curiosity kicked into overdrive.

Coats and jackets are something of a habit for me. I gravitate to thrift store coat racks and spend hours searching through racks of leather and faux fur in an everlasting attempt to find the perfect coat. This idea of perfection shifts constantly in my mind, and thus I have an entire closet–a very large closet–in my home dedicated to the beauties I collect.

When that love of outerwear combined with the chance to try out my very own piece from The Jacket Maker, I was thrilled. I scanned the site and gave it some thought, compared the pieces to the pieces I already have, and chose a read-to-wear option from the women’s “Trench & Winter” section: a silvery leather belted trench that looked straight off a designer runway. Having already purchased a couple of dreamy runway-esque pieces, I realized “couture” or “designer” labels are absolutely not synonymous with “quality.” I had faith The Jacket Maker’s quality leather would stand up better to the elements.

Mehmood encouraged me through the process of choosing between this option and a custom design, assuring me either would be a great choice and the only difference was I would need to speak directly with a designer if I wanted to create something wholly unique. I opted out, as I felt my own vision could never match the beauty of the Moonlight Silver Trench in its original glory.

In my order went, and I received tracking information almost immediately. A huge bonus for any buyer is that The Jacket Maker offers free shipping worldwide, which will save you a pretty penny considering the weight and size of the parcel in which your jacket will arrive.

My trench arrived within the week, and I unboxed it to find it comes with its own dustbag (usually something I expect only with luxury purses) and it had been wrapped thoughtfully as to avoid wrinkles and creasing. I am a sucker for great packaging and tags, and this jacket came with a heavy cardboard tag featuring a little leather jacket that stole my heart. You can also see the quality of the leather up close here, along with the firmly stitched inner tag and lush, satin-like lining.

As for sizing, I knew I was taking a risk with sizing down. I’m currently trying to shed some pandemic pounds, but I’m still about halfway through the process and thus, the jacket fits beautifully in the waist and hip area, but the arms are very snug for now–I tend to carry extra weight there anyway, so I suggest sizing up if you do as well. Regardless, I love the way it looks and can easily pair it with sleeveless dresses and tops to avoid extra bulk for the time being, and if I never lose the pandemic weight (and who cares if I don’t!), the leather is the type that has a bit of give and will naturally loosen with a few wears. Other bonuses include the double-vented backside that avoids restraining your legs as you walk, and the generous belt that helps cinch the waist to create an hourglass figure.

The Jacket Maker - Moonlight Silver Leather Trench CoatThe Jacket Maker - Moonlight Silver Leather Trench Coat

The feel and weight of the Moonlight Silver Leather Trench Coat are impeccable. For me, this feels like the perfect layer for Spring and fall weather, or a normal winter day without a ton of snow accumulation. The lining adds quite a bit of warmth, so layering over thinner pieces could make it work in much lower temperatures as well, and the futuristic silver leather would look amazing against a snowy backdrop.

Overall, my experience in ordering and owning a piece from The Jacket Maker has been fantastic. I highly recommend browsing the ready-to-wear selection, starting with 10 of my personal favorites below, or splurging on a custom style should you have a dream jacket in mind that you haven’t seen created before. If you can dream it, they can make it.

Moonlight Silver Leather Trench Coat

If you’ve read this far, you know why I love this coat. It’s beautiful and lush, just order up if you want a looser fit like that seen on the model.

Ruby Metallica Maroon Leather Blazer

This blazer is reminiscent of an Etienne Aigner design my mom treasured in the late 1970s, so naturally I’m drawn to its classic shape, color, and effortless sense of style. Leather blazers are having yet another moment–especially where I live in Brooklyn–so this is not only an incredible investment to make for the future, it’s very on-trend for 2021-2022. Take good care of it and it can be an heirloom piece that your kids will also be proud to wear someday.

Westina Tan Dye Leather Vest

This is a totally unexpected twist on a vest, and I love the detailing that makes it so unique. Silver studs add an element of toughness to the shoulders, while the tiger-like stripes of dye in the mid panel draw in the eye and add texture and interest.

The cut is mean to flatter curves whether you wear it alone or layered over a top with sleeves. Pair this with great jeans and your best boots to live out your rocker-at-brunch fantasy.

Flashback Black Leather Biker Jacket

This is it, the tried and true classic biker jacket you simply must have in your outwear collection.

Sheepskin leather with a semi-aniline (aka leather of the highest quality) finish, quilted polyester lining, two outside pockets, a notched collar with large, beautiful lapels, shoulder epaulettes, and it comes in sizes XXS to XXL in standard sizing, with a $30 additional charge to have it fitted to your exact specs? They’ve missed no detail in creating this eternal beauty, not to mention $265 for all of that is about half the price you’ll pay for brands that focus more on marketing than quality.

This slick bomber combines the muted chic of the silver leather I love so much in the trench coat above with cool black sleeves and detailing for a retro ‘80s look made modern with quality materials. Dress it up or down (as you can see the model has if you click through), and keep it on hand for those perfect spring and fall days when you need something to keep you warm but not totally bundled.
