Woman sells ‘cheating’ ex fiancé’s family heirloom to cover cancelled wedding costs

Woman sells ‘cheating’ ex fiancé’s family heirloom to cover cancelled wedding costs

A woman is fighting with her “cheating” ex-fiancé after selling the ring he proposed to her with - a family heirloom - to cover the costs of the cancelled wedding.

The 27-year-old said she called off her wedding after her 29-year-old fiancé, who she’s given the pseudonym Mason, allegedly cheated on her with his ex last month.

As the wedding was due to take place on the 20th of January, the woman had already shelled out for the venue, catering, and other essentials.

As most of the costs are non-refundable, she could be left $20,000 out of pocket.

Taking to Reddit, the woman explained that she had to take out a loan to cover the wedding costs and the interest will only grow the longer it takes for her to pay it off.

As they agreed to share their finances once they got married they would have tackled the cost between them, but she said because she called off the wedding - and they didn’t get married - he “no longer had to share finances”.

She asked for his help in paying it back and expressed that she will have to go into debt if she has to repay it alone.

Apparently, he told her: “It isn’t my problem you took out a loan you can’t pay back”, before not responding to her anymore.

But there’s a twist.

When Mason proposed, he used a family heirloom ring worth $25,000 that belonged to his great grandmother.

He asked for the ring back when the Redditor called off the wedding, but he never arranged a time to collect it.

She threatened to sell the ring if he didn’t agree to help pay off the loan, but he ignored her.

The woman then found out through a mutual friend that Mason had “read the messages and told everyone he didn’t care because [she] ‘wouldn’t do it’.” She told the mutual friend to let Mason know that if she didn’t hear from him in 24 hours, she would sell the ring - but the friend came back to say Mason “didn’t care” and “didn’t think [she] would do it”.

She wrote: “So the next day I sold the ring to an online website and messaged Mason to tell him it had been done and told him he shouldn’t have underestimated me. He started cussing me out, saying I didn’t scare him and that he would be around for the ring later.

“True to his word, he came to my house demanding the ring and I told him I sold it already and showed him the proof.

“He blew up at me, saying I was a petty b**** and that I shouldn’t have sold it because it wasn’t just a ring, it was an heirloom that meant a lot to his family.

“A lot of my family members think I overreacted and shouldn’t have gone to extreme measures as it will be hard for him to get the ring back, if he even can at all.”

She concluded the post by asking for outsider opinions on how she handled the situation.

The top comment, with 29,000 upvotes, states: “You gave him all the warning in the world. Can’t be TA [the a**hole] given that.”

Another said that although they believe engagement rings and heirlooms should be returned after a breakup, this Redditor’s situation is slightly different due to his infidelity.

They wrote: “He cheated a month before the wedding, blocked your messages, refused to help pay and mocked you. As Reddit loves to say - he f***ed around and found out. NTA [not the a**hole]”.

However not everyone was wholly on the Redditor’s side.

One commenter called her out for taking out such a hefty loan for the wedding, and said since the marriage didn’t happen the ring should have been given back. They added however that he also “sucks for cheating” and for expecting her to foot the bill on her own.
