If you’re stuck for what to buy friends and family this Christmas, why not buy them a house..?
An 89-year-old woman was evicted from her Florida home and saved by a neighbour, who bought it back and handed her back the keys.
Angie Tyma was forced to stay in a motel for three weeks, after being kicked out of the home she had lived in for 35 years.
Tyma lived there with her husband until he passed away, when a family friend who lives in Europe bought the house and rented it back to her. But the friend ran into financial difficulties and stopped paying the mortgage.
The house was sold to an investment firm, but Tyma didn’t know this until the new owner showed up and forced her to move out.
But one of Tyma’s neighbours, 65-year-old Danielle Calder, noticed Tyma’s belongings being taken out of the house.
Calder contacted the company that purchased the house at auction and bought it back for $167,500. She handed the keys to the house - freshly painted by neighbours - back over to Tyma on what happened to also be her 89th birthday.
Calder told Today:
Quite honestly, I didn't need another house. But I needed her. I couldn't see her living in a motel room; she's been here so long. Everyone looks out for her.
Everybody knows Angie. She has two little dogs that she walks. She's an elderly woman, but she's pretty feisty, and she has lots of energy.
Tyma told the show:
Usually one of my neighbors bakes me a cake every year, but this time, when I got out of the car, and saw all these people, and the media. I was in a state of shock. I was speechless. I couldn't even talk.
