A new mom was left shocked after she received the absurd hospital bill for her baby’s birth.
In a now-viral TikTok, @shannonmayor revealed the cost of her visit to the hospital: $50,816.02. While this was the grand total, the hospital bill further broke down how much Shannon’s insurance plan covered and the final amount that she owed with the coverage included.
Luckily, Shannon’s insurance covered the majority of the debt, leaving her to pay only $250.00 of the hefty bill.
@shannonmayor I wasn’t expecting the total to be that high 😅 #hospitalbirth #fyp #bills
The TikToker captioned her post: “I wasn’t expecting the total to be that high.” As of the moment, the video has received over 7.8 million views.
While Shannon does not have to pay the eye-watering amount, the 12-second video sparked a debate in the comments, with many appalled and frustrated by America’s healthcare system. Moreover, Shannon’s video highlighted the unfair disadvantage those without health insurance faced.
“You shouldn’t even have to pay $250. America is a joke,” read a top comment with 56.5K likes.
“I can’t believe you literally have to PAY to GIVE BIRTH! What if you can’t afford it? Do they put the baby back in or???”
“Mine was 300k after a month stay in NICU. I just threw the bill away. Who do I look like?? bill gates?!
Then, TikTok users from around the world chimed in the comments to share their disbelief and how their own country’s health care chalked up in comparison.
“I mean I’d sue the hospital. Paying 250 is just outrageous from a Finnish point of view,” one said.
“In singapore they pay u to give birth,” another added.
“*sighs in relief in canadian,” a third said.
“WHAT?! here in the phillippines it only costs like 5-20 dollars WHAT THEY CHARGING THAT MUCH FOR? AIR??” another wrote.
“0. With 4 weeks of bed rest in hospital before, 9 weeks in the NICU and 4 weeks in the nursery. Love Australia,” said one viewer.
In response to the above comment, the new mom replied: “This post is making me want to leave America so bad lol. I mean I already did but especially now.”
