The important reason one of Harvey Weinstein's accusers won't celebrate his arrest

Harvey Weinstein has been charged with rape and sexual assault after he turned himself in to police.

Mr Weinstein was later released on $1m (£750,000) bail, with constant electronic monitoring and a ban on travelling beyond New York and Connecticut. He left through a courthouse back door less than three hours after his arrest.

Women across the world see his arrest as the dawn of a new era – one in which sexual predators are punished for their crimes.

Rose McGowan, one of his many accusers, took to Twitter with a simple statement:

As did New York Times reporter Jodi Kantor.

However, not everyone is happy with how the authorities dealt with Weinstein.

Annabella Sciorra, one of the women accused the Hollywood producer of raping her in the early 1990s, said nothing "felt celebratory".

She also attacked the public statement given by Weinstein's lawyer, who criticised his client's accusers' credibility after he suggested they might be "consumed by the movement that seems to have overtaken this case”.

Sciorra claimed that "money buys VIP treatment in the justice system".

And compared it to the infamous case of Kalief Browder, who spent 1,000 days in jail for a crime he was never charged for.

Others echoed her sentiments.
