Russia has appointed 90s action movie star and martial artist Steven Seagal as a special envoy to improve ties with the United States.
This, ladies and gents, is the world we live in.
In a Facebook post, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced Seagel had been appointed to a new role, although it will allegedly be unpaid.
His responsibility will be to “facilitate relations between Russia and the United States in the humanitarian field, including cooperation in culture, arts, and public and youth exchanges".
Seagal, who was given Russian citizenship in 2016 after visiting Vladimir Putin at the Kremlin, responded by thanking Russia. He wrote on Twitter:
I am deeply humbled and honoured to have been appointed as a special representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry in charge of Russian and American Humanitarian ties. I hope we can strive for peace, harmony and positive results in the world.
I take this honour very seriously.
Lots of people were... Well, they were shocked.
And once the shock wore off, doubt replaced it. Others thought it was fake news. (It's not!)
People talked about Dennis Rodman, whose frequent visits to another dictatorial regime, North Korea, became the subject of international attention...
And the jokes came thick and fast:
Yeah.
