A new study has found what makes us as happy as frequent sex.
It’s the equivalent of getting a £40,000 (GBP) a year raise.
So if your manager is withholding, why not make sure you’re home by five thirty every day for some quality hoo-ha.
It can be as infrequent as once a week, but why limit yourself?
Researchers at the University of Toronto proposed that $50,000 (USD) made people happier to the same extent that having sex once a week instead of once a month did.
Lead author post-doctoral student Anik Debrot looked at multiple studies of sex and wellbeing. 335 Americans were asked online about their relationships, including how often they had sex, and how often they kissed of cuddled a partner. Further interviews were conducted with 74 couples in San Francisco, asking them the same questions.
The researchers also asked 107 couples to keep a diary of sex, and found that those who had more sex over a 10 day period had a much higher level of satisfaction in their relationships.
In the introduction to the study, Debrot wrote:
The size of the difference in well-being for people having sex once a week, compared with those having sex less than once a month, was greater than the size of the difference in well-being for those making US $75,000 compared with US $25,000 a year—a US $50,000 difference.
Sex and Money
Another study from Toronto published in 2015 looked at how the frequency of sex improves well-being. They found that high frequencies of sex, or increasing the frequency did not necessarily equal greater happiness.
In their conclusion, the researchers paraphrased the American writer John Updike:
Our research demonstrates, however, that although greater sexual frequency is associated with greater well-being, more is not always better. Instead, sex may be like money—only too little is bad.
