Fans were ecstatic when news hit that Sex and the City would make a hotly anticipated return as And Just Like That. However, disappointment soon crept in after they learnt about the absence of PR executive, Samantha Jones (played by Kim Cattrall) – after all, Sex and the City without Samantha is just... And the City.
Fans have since been drawing up their own theories and conclusions as to why – and with thanks to supposed ‘behind the scenes’ footage uploaded to TikTok, they were sent into overdrive.
The clip shows an array of extras dressed in head-to-toe black attire, seemingly associated with a funeral. TikTok user, Evan Kline (@klinetime), narrates, “I was walking down the street in New York City and saw a huge crowd and realised they were filming for Sex And The City,”
“But everyone was wearing all black. Is it for Samantha’s funeral?”

While fan theories abound, Samantha’s absence has been put down to a fizzled out friendship between the foursome. HBO chief content officer Casey Bloys said, “They’re trying to tell an honest story about being a woman in her 50s in New York. So it should all feel somewhat organic, and the friends that you have when you’re 30, you may not have when you’re 50,”
“Just as in real life, people come into your life, people leave,” he said. “Friendships fade, and new friendships start. So I think it is all very indicative of the real stages, the actual stages of life.”
Naturally, TikTokers took to the comments to share their predictions. Many believe the alleged ‘funeral scene’ is to mark the death of Samantha, while others are certain Mr Big dies.
“If it’s Mr Big, how come he had no friends the night before his wedding to help him, and all these people to say goodbye”, one pointed out, while another alleged, “Mr Big was supposed to die of a heart attack in a third movie that never happened. They might have gone in a different direction for the new show.”
Some had doubts that it would be the death of Samantha’s as “they wouldn’t want to end a character like her.” Another suggested, “If it were Samantha’s funeral, their outfits would've been more colourful.”
In a surprising turn of events, the TikToker took to the comments with an update. “Apparently having all these people dressed for a “funeral” is just a diversion, so no one knows the plot. I’m so confused now”, he said.
I guess we’ll have to wait and see.
