It can be a dog's life for a police officer on the beat.

Some folks just aren't cut out for that line of work, and that includes some of our canine friends. Take Gavel in Queensland, Australia for example.

The young German shepherd had done months of training at a police dog academy, but it seems he just wanted to have fun.

Rather than chasing criminals, he wanted to fetch sticks and have his belly tickled, which sounds like a much better idea.

It was soon decided that Gavel was unlikely to be a valuable member of the force, but lucky for him, he landed a perfect job for his skills.

The governor of Queensland, Paul de Jersey, adopted Gavel and appointed him vice-regal dog.

"He may have missed out on becoming a Queensland police service dog, but it is abundantly clear that Gavel has the characteristics necessary to adequately fulfil duties as Queensland's official vice-regal dog"

He even signed a contract.

Now he's having a great time in his new job, welcoming visitors, attending prestigious ceremonies and occasionally getting his head caught in bags.

He's having the best time.

Officially 'a good boy'.
