A shocked man thought he saw a ship floating in midair, after capturing a photograph of a large boat appearing to hang in the sky.

It turns out, Colin McCallum had photographed a fairly stunning optical illusion of a red ship above the horizon, while travelling through Banff, Aberdeenshire last month.

At first, he filmed the unusual sight, before working out how the optical illusion had been created. In the footage, a low cloud makes it difficult to see where the water ends and the sky begins.

McCallum shared the images onto Facebook later on that day, writing: “Saw a real-life optical illusion in Banff today.”

Colin told the Daily Mail: “When I first saw the boat, I had to do a double-take because I genuinely thought it was floating.

“Upon further inspection, however, I noticed that it was in fact just a remarkable optical illusion.”

After being shared on Facebook, the post went relatively viral and prompted some confused reactions, with people calling the photograph, “freaky”.

“I genuinely can't understand what is going on here,” one person commented on the Facebook post. “That’s brilliant!” another person said.
