Throwing in 'middle class' as a derisory adjective is turning it into something of a placeholder phrase in snipey remarks.
Despite this, the majority of people still describe themselves as such.
According to a poll by Esure fewer than 1 per cent of British people describe themselves as upper class.
Forty per cent of people describe themselves as 'middle class', and apparently there's a way of finding out if you are too... by looking at the items in your house.
