Giant effigies of David Cameron and a pig are going to be burned at the stake

An effigy of David Cameron and a pig's head has been spotted in Lewes ahead of the town's Bonfire Night celebrations.

The Sussex town, whose MP is Conservative Maria Caulfield, boasts of having "the greatest bonfire celebrations on Earth".

Each year, an effigy of someone in the news is burned. Previous years have seen Bashar Assad and Alex Salmond paraded in front of thousands of locals (although Salmond was spared burning after after a string of complaints and social media outrage).

This year, after a questionable tale about his university days was published in an unauthorised biography, it appears to be the turn of David Cameron and his pig:

Local resident Steve Tremlett, who spotted the model of the prime minister parked at Lewes bus station on Thursday morning, told i100.co.uk that it's not supposed to be a political statement.

People are amused by it. These things aren't intended to be political statements, they represent topical news items through the year.

Lewes isn't a very Tory town though.

Asked if he'd be attending the bonfire, Mr Tremlett confirmed: "I do indeed plan to watch it burn!"

It's not just Cameron being burned tonight, either.
