A gender neutral set of playing cards is stirring up anger among a minority of people online (including Piers Morgan).

The deck was designed by Dutch card fan, Indy Mellink, who decided to make her cards gender neutral when she couldn’t understand why a king ranks higher than a queen.

“If we have this hierarchy that the king is worth more than the queen then this subtle inequality influences people in their daily life because it’s just another way of saying, ‘hey, you’re less important,” she said.

In her new deck of cards, the king, queen and jack cards have been replaced by gold, silver and bronze.

In a report by Reuters, people were generally accepting of genderless cards, but noted that it would take some time to be able to make the switch.

Mellink’s cards are already proving popular, with 1,500 packs being sent to several countries including the US.

However, not everyone was quite so accepting. People on social media have decried the cards as another “pathetic” move by “snowflakes”. Among those who complained about Mellink’s product was Piers Morgan, who had a succinct but telling response.

While many were somehow enraged by a fairly innocent pack of cards, others were simply wondering what the big deal was.

Whether gender bias in card games is actually an issue remains to be seen, but it feels like gender neutral cards hurt no one except the people who are offended by them.
