TikTok-famous medic Dr Karan Raj has revealed the disgusting reason you shouldn’t hold in a fart.

In a clip that has racked up o 2.5 million views on the platform, Raj expertly ran through a myriad of interesting facts about farts, including the average frequency and what it’s made up of.

Dr Raj explained: “On average people fart 14 times a day – the more the merrier. If someone tells you they don’t fart they’re lying and you should disown them immediately, or they’ve got  a bowel obstruction which is a medical emergency.”

He also revealed that the average person’s daily fart volume is enough to fill up a medium-sized balloon and said the first fart of the day is usually the largest.

But the most horrifying revelation Dr Raj made was about what happens when you hold in a fart, explaining that it can eventually come out of the other end.

He explained: “If you hold in a fart too long it can be reabsorbed into your blood circulation and breathed out when you exhale.”

The video had received more than 5,000 comments from TikTok users sharing their own... experiences.

One person revealed: “I can fill a hot air balloon on a good day.”

Another admitted: “I farted during this video.”

Another said: “My bedtime fart is the worst haha.”

To which Dr Raj responded: “Yes, a whole day’s worth of bacteria recycling your food into foul farts.”

Interestingly, Dr Raj also explained that 99 per cent of a fart is comprised of odourless gasses, while the 1 per cent that makes a fart smell is made up of “volatile sulphur compounds like hydrogen sulphide”.

Good to know.
