Jeremy Corbyn once supported a motion which looked forward to an asteroid destroying the planet

A decade ago, when Jeremy Corbyn wasn't running for the Labour leadership but solely concentrating on being MP for Islington North, he spent his time trying to pass well-meaning motions through the Commons and tending to his allotment.

Now that the spotlight is well and truly on him as the "last hope of the left"/"Labour's worst nightmare" (delete as appropriate), more scrutiny is being thrown his way.

Instances where he invited members of Sinn Fein into Parliament at the height of the Troubles and where he appeared to call Hamas and Hezbollah "friends" have both led to headlines since his emergence as the favourite in the Labour leadership race.

But among the more bizarre things to surface since, some have scrawled back through the parliamentary archives to find that not only did 'Jez' sponsor a motion to officially congratulate Arsenal on their title win in 2004, he also supported one titled "PIGEON BOMBS" which looked forward to an asteroid careering into Earth and destroying the human race:

Signed on 21 May 2004, the early day motion read:

That this House is appalled, but barely surprised, at the revelations in M15 [sic] files regarding the bizarre and inhumane proposals to use pigeons as flying bombs; recognises the important and live-saving role of carrier pigeons in two world wars and wonders at the lack of gratitude towards these gentle creatures; and believes that humans represent the most obscene, perverted, cruel, uncivilised and lethal species ever to inhabit the planet and looks forward to the day when the inevitable asteroid slams into the earth and wipes them out thus giving nature the opportunity to start again.
