Of all the claims about Jeremy Corbyn’s parliamentary and activist history dragged through the media since he was elected Labour leader, one bombshell reigned supreme.
It's just over 15 years ago since he and his Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell backed an Early Day Motion supporting the destruction of the entire planet.
The motion, tabled by former MP Tony Banks, can surely be filed under one of parliament’s more bizarre efforts to prevent cruelty to animals, and has all the makings of an outlandish B-movie script – MI5 carrier pigeons acting as “flying bombs”, a genocidal condemnation of beyond the pale human nature, and the potential obliteration of the Earth by an unstoppable asteroid.
Titled “Pigeon bombs”, it reads:
That this House is appalled, but barely surprised, at the revelations in M15 files regarding the bizarre and inhumane proposals to use pigeons as flying bombs…
…recognises the important and live-saving role of carrier pigeons in two world wars and wonders at the lack of gratitude towards these gentle creatures…
…and believes that humans represent the most obscene, perverted, cruel, uncivilised and lethal species ever to inhabit the planet and…
...looks forward to the day when the inevitable asteroid slams into the earth and wipes them out thus giving nature the opportunity to start again.
Corbyn, McDonnell and Banks were the only three signatories.
Some felt some sympathy with Mr Corbyn's request.
