Chambers Dictionary, first published in 1872, has made 1,000 additions and updates to its latest edition. These are some of the new words and phrases that have been included:

Gripe sites

• Websites that have been set up as a forum for people to air their grievances about an organisation

Clickbait

• Intriguing hyperlinks that encourage readers to click to another website

Finlit

• Financial literacy

Whovian

• An enthusiast of the television series ‘Doctor Who’

Amazeballs

• Unusually good; amazing

Peeps

• A person’s friends or entourage

YOLO

• Acronym for 'you only live once'

Mare

• A calamitous experience

Underperform

• To do less well than expected or thought possible

Hipsters

• Those born in the 1980s and 90s, who look down on their native middle class culture in pursuit of a bohemian lifestyle
