Prime minister Boris Johnson made an appearance at the England v Denmark Euro 2020 game at Wembley, wearing an England jersey with his name on the back followed by - you guessed it - the number ‘10’.

But, being the PM and being Johnson, many on social media were quick to mock him.

Before the game on Wednesday, Johnson had posted a photo of himself on Twitter with his back turned and his hands in the air showing off his jersey with the following caption: “We’re behind you @England!”

He was getting into his car to head to the game - which England won in extra-time - and was later pictured wearing it in the stands, standing not far from Prince William.

People on Twitter were quick to comment on the sartorial decision, with many dismissing it as a publicity stunt.

“This man claims not to believe in ‘gesture politics.’ By all means, give me an instance when @BorisJohnson has NOT done gesture politics,” someone wrote.

Others were quick to point out his pose in the Twitter picture - him with his back turned.

“Fitting, as you’ve already turned your back on the people of the country. #JohnsonVariant,” another added.

A third person joked that the last time Johnson stood behind someone in support and what that led to, writing the following: “Idk if this was a good tweet tbh, last time a Minister was publicly behind someone they had to resign.”

Someone else decided that it has great potential to be the brunt of a Photoshop meme, reminding us of a photo of Johnson and his wife Carrie watching the England vs Germany game on TV last week which was ruthlessly edited to show former Health Secretary Matt Hancock and his romantic tryst with Gina Coladangelo.

“This image is just crying out to be photoshopped,” they added.

In response to the tweet about photoshopping, someone responded, saying, “Fixed it for ya.”

Check out some other reactions below to Johnson supporting England during the match with Denmark.

Recently, Johnson said that he wanted the whole country to stand with the England team - despite saying he did not want to penalize those who booed at soccer players taking the knee in support of anti-racism at the start of Euro 2020.
