A young woman said she was left weeping in her seat after she was apparently accosted by a furious air attendant over her outfit.
The complainant, a TikTok user called Sierra (@sierrasteadman), claims she was grabbed by the Alaska Airlines stewardess and shouted at in front of the entire plane for wearing a crop top and shorts for her flight.
Sierra filmed herself sitting in her seat following the alleged encounter. The video – which she later posted to the platform – shows her wearing a face mask and the hood of her jacket pulled up as she struggles to fight back tears.
A text bubble on her clip reads: “When the flight attendant slut shames you in front of the whole plane and threatens to kick you off for what [you’re] wearing.”
In a separate caption, she wrote: “I’ve never felt more degraded, ashamed, embarrassed, angry or sad.”
She later explained that the worker had seized her by the arm and yelled at her in front of the other passengers, even after she’d agreed to zip up her jacket to cover up.
Sierra was left visibly distressed by the confrontation@sierrasteadman/TikTok
The brief recording racked up more than 5.6 million views and 1.4 million likes in just two days as fellow TikTokers shared their horror at Sierra’s apparent treatment.
A number pointed out that the attendant’s alleged behaviour constituted assault, with a number encouraging her to lodge a formal complaint to the airline or even threaten legal action.
Inevitably, many users wanted to know what exactly she’d been wearing to prompt such a fierce reaction.
Sierra obliged them with a photo of her get-up at the time: white shorts, a black sports bra and a large grey hoodie.
Scores of users agreed that the outfit wasn’t inappropriate@sierrasteadman/TikTok
In a comment she noted: “Outfit appropriation [sic] set aside, there was no reason to physically and verbally assault me and humiliate me, especially when I complied with her request.”
In a follow-up TikTok, Sierra addressed some users who accused her of disrespecting the airline’s dress code.
Providing more details on the circumstances surrounding the confrontation, she said: “When I got onto the plane she (the air hostess) immediately stopped me before I’d even got to my seat and told me to zip up my jacket.
“I [nodded] my head like this and started to zip up my jacket and then started to walk to my seat. That should have been the end of that.”
Sierra explained that her issue was with how the flight attendant handled with situation@sierrasteadman/TikTok
But, she continued: “Instead she decided to grab my arm and pull me back towards her to start yelling at me in front of everybody. That is where the problem is.”
She went on: “I have no problem with her asking me to zip up my jacket – it’s her plane, she works on the plane, if that’s what she wants then I’ll zip up my jacket – but the things that happened after that, especially when she grabbed me is where this is not OK.”
It’s also worth noting that Sierra’s outfit did, in fact, appear tp conform to Alaska Airlines’ official dress code which states that “the requirement is simply a neat and well-groomed appearance” and that the only things deemed unacceptable are “clothing that is soiled or tattered and bare feet”.
In another post, Sierra revealed that she and her mother had sent a complaint to the airline and received an email response.
The airline admitted it had ‘failed’ Sierra@sierrasteadman/TikTok
The message she shared reads: “Alaska strives to provide exceptional service to our customers. From what you have shared, it is apparent that we have failed.
“You and your daughter should expect nothing less than to be treated with the utmost respect, compassion and care. It is truly disappointing to hear that you both did not feel that way during boarding and during the interactions with our Flight Attendant.
“We want to assure you that we take these matters very seriously and have shared your concern with our inflight management team that will conduct an internal investigation. Due to privacy concerns, we will not be able to disclose any findings, but can guarantee you that this will be reviewed.”
It ends: “On behalf of Alaska, I’d like to sincerely apologise for Sierra’s experience with our Flight Attendant and apologise to you both for how this was handled.”
A spokesperson for the airline told indy100: “We are in contact with Sierra and her family and are committed to finding out what happened and taking all appropriate action.
“It’s our goal to provide caring service to all of our guests. When we don’t live up to that goal, we do we everything we can to make it right.”
