6 things that will die with the 24-hour night Tube

Life is about to get a lot easier on September 12 (unless you're a Tube driver/member of Aslef), when huge swathes of the Central, Jubilee, Northern, Piccadilly and Victoria lines go 24-hour at weekends.

Several things will disappear with it, mostly inconveniences it'll be good to see the back of, but also a few London nightlife staples and formative experiences...

1. Convenient end points for bad dates/seemingly inexorable 'work drinks'

It's 11.30pm, you're tired, hopelessly drunk on half a Kopparberg because you didn't eat dinner and you need to go home. "Gotta go, last train" will no longer be an excuse.

2. Confused drunk men in bedraggled suits standing in front of the gates of Tube stations

You know the kind, incensed by the idea of the Tube being closed as if the attendant has just suggested Wednesdays never have existed.

3. The horror of the 'last train'

That biblical scene of people wading through ankle-deep, warm Strongbow, bouncing off posts and lolling against seat dividers, occasionally stirring to find they've gone southbound rather than north or to shout slurs - that's over. Although now the scene will be opened out into several slightly vomity acts until 5am and perhaps beyond.

4. Crashing on friends' sofas

This won't die out, but will drop hugely now it's a lot easier to get home. No more trying to use a cushion as a duvet and waking up fully-clothed, yay!

5. Waiting for the first train

F--k 5am. Not even Costcutter is open at 5am. Now however, you won't have to sit on a bollard watching a pigeon peck at a chicken nugget indifferently, but get a nice semi-warm Tube back to your bed!

6. Your ability to function at work

This is really dependent on your work ethic and self-discipline, but the midnight cut-off point for going home on a school night (if you work weekends) will evaporate, leading to the hideous prospect of getting to your desk on two hours sleep, eyes boiling in your skull, struggling to remember how many capital letters and numbers are in your login password.
