11 of the weirdest visa questions

Filling out a landing card when you're bleary eyed from crossing seven timezones to a place you're not familiar with isn't a pleasant experience at the best of times.

But there are some immigration questions, mired in outdated security concerns or just bureaucratic , which make no sense today - no matter the cultural context.

Here are some of the oddest visa application form questions ever encountered:

1. Mexico

“Describe your moustache/beard”

The options to choose from were "scanty", "bushy" or "clipped".

2. USA

"Between 1933 and 1945 were you involved, in any way, in persecutions involved with Nazi Germany or its allies?"

3. Mexico (again)

“Foreigners please sing in the box”

(We think it was a typo)

4. UK and USA

“Has the applicant ever been involved in, supported or encouraged terrorist activities in any country?”

5. Australia

“Have you been to a farm in the past six weeks?”

6. USA (again)

"What side of the bed does your wife sleep on?”

7. Middle Eastern country (not specified)

"How many wives do you intend to bring?"

8. UK student visa

“In times of either peace or war has the applicant ever been involved, or suspected of involvement, in war crimes, crimes against humanity or genocide?”

9. India

Apparently on an India visa application form there was no option to state "none" when asked for your religion.

10. Student visas everywhere

“Name three things about...”

Seven people said this question was asked of potential students to make sure they're legitimate candidates.

11. China

Under "reasons for visiting", "visit" was listed as an option.
