Why a US city enforced an official ban on cheese this week

Bainbridge Island, a short ferry ride across the Puget Sound from Seattle, implemented a ban on cheese this week.

A local government document signed by city manager Douglas Schulze, banned the "possession of and/or consumption of cheese or cheese flavored products" from the City Hall.

The ban was implemented in the build-up to the local American Football team Seattle Seahawks' game against the Green Bay Packers who are well-known for their strong affiliation to cheese.

Fans of the Green Bay Packers are frequently seen wearing obnoxious wedge-shaped foam hats painted yellow.

Wisconsin is known as "America's Dairyland" and produces more cheese than any other state in the US. The Packers play the Seahawks on Sunday night.
