A touching moment between tennis stars Naomi Osaka and Coco Gauff after their US Open match on Saturday has gone viral for the incredible levels of sportsmanship shown.
Gauff, the 15-year-old former juniors champion, earned her match against the reigning champion Osaka by winning against two other experienced players earlier on in the tournament. Osaka beat Gauff in straight sets, however, it's what happened next that caught social media users' attention.
When Gauff began to cry post-defeat, Osaka quickly put herself into Gauff's sneakers, helping to turn a negative into a positive.
In a clip that has now gone viral Osaka is seen approaching Gauff to console her after the match and is heard telling the young star that she shouldn't be worried about crying saying:
You're good - it's better to do it on the court than alone in the shower in the locker room.
But the excellent examples of sportsmanship didn't end there.
Both players ended up in tears during their post-match interviews, with Osaka choking up, as she turned towards Gauff's parents in the stand. Fighting to keep her composure, she said:
You guys raised an amazing player.
I remember I used to see you guys train in the same place as us, and for me the fact that both of us made it, and we’re both still working as hard as we can, I think it’s incredible.
I think you guys are amazing, and I think, Coco, you are amazing.
Speaking post-match, Gauff said that she felt Osaka's behaviour was the 'definition of an athlete':
For me, the definition of an athlete is someone who on the court treats you like your worst enemy but off the court can be your best friend.Â
I think that’s what she did tonight.
When the clip of the touching moment was shared to Twitter, it quickly went viral.
Even Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was impressed.
In a tweet, the young Democratic congresswoman said:
Wow. What a moment.Â
These two women, @Naomi_Osaka & @CocoGauff, set an example for the world last night.Â
This is what it's all about.Â
