Cristiano Ronaldo took his spoiled brat reputation to a whole new level on Tuesday night after Portugal's 1-1 draw against Iceland in their opening game of Euro 2016.
After refusing to shake hands or swap shirts with players from by far the smallest country at the tournament, the world's highest paid player then told reporters:
The way they celebrated at the end was unbelievable. Iceland don’t try to play, they just defend, defend and defend.
Then they celebrate like they have won the Euros.
This in my opinion shows a small mentality. They are not going to do anything in this competition.
The response to his comments were almost resoundingly negative, considering Iceland has a population of around 330,000 - smaller than the city of Leicester - and that they played out of their skins to get the 1-1 result.
But there was one man who didn't want to just let the rest of the world criticise Ronaldo.
Iceland defender Kari Arnason decided he wanted to get stuck in to the Real Madrid forward. And get stuck in he did:
Obviously we’re not going to create as much chances as a fantastic team like Portugal but his comments are the reason why Messi is always going to be one step ahead of him. You wouldn’t expect Messi to say that. It shows we got under his skin. It was lovely to hear that.
It makes it even sweeter when he’s a sore loser like that. He can say whatever he wants. He didn’t really get a chance. He got one and he couldn’t put it away. What can I say? Sore loser. Tough shit. What does he expect – for us to play like Barcelona against him? He fannies about and dives around.
Zing.
