Transformers: Age of Extinction officially a contender for best picture Oscar

Well, kind of.

Paramount Pictures has submitted the fourth Transformers film for consideration in the best picture category at next year's 87th Academy Awards.

The studio has also put forward Michael Bay and Ehren Kruger for best director and best adapted screenplay respectively.

Transformers: Age of Extinction (plot: something something Mark Wahlberg robot dinosaurs) was not a hit with critics, with a score of only 18 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes, but somehow managed to win over audiences who parted with more than $1billion (yes, a billion) at the global box office.

The film has been submitted by Paramount alongside some of its other major releases, including Noah, Hercules and Interstellar.

The Oscar Nominations will be announced next month.
