Six rockstars with hobbies your grandmother would approve of

The Who's frontman, Roger Daltrey, has backed plans for the creation of an international model-railway museum in Ashford. A self declared enthusiast, he's just one of many rockstars with decidedly unrock hobbies...

1. Alice Cooper

Of all the methods adopted by rock stars to overcome addiction, Cooper's is perhaps the most prosaic: golf. The rocker said that when he picked up a club, he replaced one addiction with another - and even named his autobiography Alice Cooper, Golf Monster.

2. Marilyn Manson

When not singing songs such as 'Mutilation Is the Most Sincere Form of Flattery', Manson finds release in watercolour painting. His subject matter is predictably morbid.

3. Alex James

Perhaps the best-known un-rock rock star. After spending the Nineties in Blur and, presumably, in a blur, bassist James moved to the Cotswolds and started making cheese. His Shropshire blue speaks of its rock heritage: it's called Blue Monday.

4. Keith Flint

Offstage, the spiky-haired Prodigy singer can be found in the garden of his Victorian cottage in Essex tending to his roses. He is also, apparently, partial to interior design.

5. Guy Garvey

Sex, drugs and ornithology may well be Guy Garvey's motto. When not playing Glastonbury's Pyramid Stage or recording No 1 albums, the lead singer of Elbow enjoys nothing more than a spot of birdwatching.

6. Brian May

May had to put his PhD in astrophysics on hold to find fame and fortune as Queen's guitarist. He returned to it later, completing his thesis in 2008 on a mysterious phenomenon known as zodiacal light.
