Ryan Reynolds gave an acceptance speech Deadpool would have been proud of

Ryan Reynolds has slowly but surely carved a special place into all of our hearts with his self-deprecating humour and Twitter dad antics.

His portrayal of the titular antihero in Deadpool was crass, tongue-in-cheek and touching in turn.

It's not surprising, therefore, that he was awarded Entertainment Weekly’s entertainer of the year award and best actor for his potty-mouthed Deadpool.

His acceptance speech at Sunday’s critics’ choice awards took on a more serious note than usual, and he dedicated his award to children who are fighting cancer.

The character had cancer and some of the people that this character resonated with was sick kids.

So I would like to dedicate this honour to the Make-a-Wish Foundation and the SickKids Foundation of Toronto, two incredible organizations that do so much for so many kids in need.

And I’d also like to dedicate this award to the memory of my friends, Conor McGrath and Grace Bowen.

They didn’t lose the battle. They started a fight and it’s up to us to finish it.

He didn't stop there, and the last line of his speech was more Deadpool than Reynolds.

I also want to thank my wife, and for no reason – at all – I suppose my children.
