The Beauty and the Beast live-action remake contains a first for Disney. An openly gay character.
The blossoming relationship between the character LeFou and his handsome friend is a milestone many will celebrate, but Russia (unsurprisingly) isn’t happy.
While the film has a PG (Parental Guidance) rating in the UK. Russia's culture ministry has given the musical an 'adults-only' rating.
Why?
Because of the aforementioned gay character of course. More specifically, according to the Russian MP who called for the film to be banned completely, it contains “obvious, barefaced, unscrupulous propaganda of sin and perverted sexual relations”.
Vitaly Milonov wrote this in a letter to Russia’s culture minister ahead of the film’s release on 16 March. But instead of banning it outright, only those aged 16 and over will be able to see the film.
Giving minors information about homosexuality has been illegal in Russia since 2013,: a law authored by Milonov, and homosexuality was only dropped from a list of psychiatric disorders in 1999.
