‘Resident Evil’ reboot title confirmed… and director says movie’s going to be ‘creepy as f***’

It’s official: the new Resident Evil movie reboot is called Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City.

Director Johannes Roberts confirmed the hotly anticipated title during an online interview for South by Southwest (SXSW) festival.

The new film is an adaptation of the first two Resident Evil games and will include famous protagonists from both, including Leon S. Kennedy, Chris and Claire Redfield and Jill Valentine.

It is not to be confused with projects in the Netflix pipeline including the animated CGI feature Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness, and a live-action Resident Evil TV spinoff.

Roberts’ project – produced by Sony Pictures and due for release in September – is also entirely unrelated to the earlier franchise starring Mila Jovovich and directed by Paul W. S. Anderson.

However, Roberts has admitted the strong influence of another director on his latest work: horror icon John Carpenter.

Roberts told SXSW: ““I’m a huge John Carpenter fan and I really took to that – the way he tells these claustrophobic siege movies.

“I took movies likeAssault on Precinct 13 and The Fog and these disparate groups of characters coming together under siege, and I took that as my filmic inspiration,” he added.

The director explained that the film would be filmed across two “very separate” locations, both with distinct tones.

“One is more of a siege movie style with the police station, and then you have the mansion which is creepy as f***.”

The release may be months away but it’s already time to get excited.
