Piers Morgan has responded to Jedward on Twitter after the singers said the Winston Churchill statue should be in his garden because “it has no place in society”.

The former Good Morning Britain host said he would be proud to have it there and that the X Factor duo John and Edward Grimes were “imbeciles”.

This follows on from images appearing of the police protecting the bust of the wartime prime minister in Parliament Square, in stark contrast to their conduct at the vigil on Clapham Common.

The images appeared on Sunday at the protest where people expressed their discontent with how they believed police had exacerbated tensions at the event to commemorate the life of Sarah Everard and every other woman who had died at the hands of male violence.

Figures such as politicians have spoken out against the actions of the police and The Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill, which will give more prison time to someone who defaces a statue than someone who is convicted of rape, something that Susanna Reid raised on the show that Piers Morgan used to present until last week.

He left after coming under fire for his comments about Meghan Markle’s various revelations in the interview she did with Oprah Winfrey alongside her husband Prince Harry.

Ofcom received over 41,000 complaints about what Morgan said. Jedward suggested that Louis Walsh replace them as he was of a similar demographic.

Jedward are no strangers to online political point-making, tweeting critiques of Labour leader Keir Starmer and men who abuse women. Additionally, they are very proud of their Irish heritage
