It’s about that time again! Netflix’s The Circle will be gracing the streaming service on Wednesdays this April.
The Circle, based on the UK television series of the same name, was released on January 1, 2020.
The show chronicles a group of isolated people in their own apartments. They can only communicate with other contestants via The Circle, a computer program that transcribes their messages into texts similar to a social media platform. They don’t meet face to face during the competition, which adds to the intrigue.
Contestants can present themselves with entirely different identities to hopefully win each over. Additionally, the contestants are asked to rate each other, with the top contestants with the most votes becoming the “Influencers” of the circle. It gives them the autonomy to “block” one contestant from the circle, eliminating them from the game.
The blocked contestants are eliminated from the game. However, they are allowed to meet a player in person who’s still in the game. Also, a video message is shown to the remaining contestants to reveal if the person was real or a catfish.
In the finale, the person who becomes the highest-rated player wins and takes home US$100,000. The person who was Fan Favorite earned $10,000.
Essentially, this is an interesting take on the power of influence and the ability to make a whole identity for yourself online that is hard not to watch.

“We wanted people from lots of different backgrounds. Other reality shows, whether it’s ‘Real Housewives’ or ‘Jersey Shore,’ they’re all one gang of quite similar characters. What ‘The Circle’ gave us the opportunity to do was cast a very diverse net across the United States,” executive producer Tim Harcourt told Variety,
Moreover, roughly 20 to 25 people are in the clear to participate in the show, but it only starts with eight cast members. When someone gets blocked or voted out, a new contestant is then able to enter the game. Producers then have the responsibility of deciding who to fly out to replace the person who left the show.
