British rapper Slowthai has sparked controversy after he held up a replica of Boris Johnson's severed head at the Mercury Prize ceremony on Thursday evening.
Brandishing the dummy at the end of his performance, the 24-year-old rapper said:
F*** Boris Johnson, f*** everything and there ain’t nothing great about Britain.
Members of the audience greeted his stunt with rapturous applause at the event in the Eventim Apollo in London.
After the rapper walked off of the stage, the event's host, Lauren Laverne, said:
Slowthai, with his own views there.
He also posted a photograph of himself on his Instagram account holding up the effigy, in order to promote his 'F*** Boris' t-shirts.
Many people on social media had thoughts about the stunt, with some wondering if the police had been involved.
And others responded with excellent 'police' jokes. Geddit?
While others thought it was 'beautiful'.
There were also a number of comparisons with stunts pulled by Kathy Griffin, the US comedian who, two years ago, was dropped from CNN after she posed with the fake decapitated head of Donald Trump.
Slowthai had been nominated for the Mercury Prize for his debut album, Nothing Great About Britain, however, fellow rapper Dave won the award for his album titled Psychodrama.
