OK, full disclosure. I had to Google Lil Yachty before writing this.
Lil Yachty recently posted on Rap Genius, and gave us a window into his mind.
The 19-year-old just released his second album Teenage Emotions. Who does he think he is, Laura Marling? (Told you I had to Google him.)
The post has gone viral, mostly for it's openness, and the number of questions it throws up.
It's all because one of the tracks on Teenage Emotions, 'Peek a Boo' has the lyric:
She blow that d*** like a cello.
For those of you who (like me until now) don't know, Rap Genius has a feature for annotating lyrics.
Here's what Lil Yachty wrote on his:
OK, let’s stop for a second.
Before you come at me, I'ma let you know.
I'ma blame my A&R. Because he listened to that song many times and he allowed me to say that.
I guess for a second, I thought a cello was a woodwind instrument and it is not. And nobody ever said sh*t. Nobody ever pulled up a pic and said, 'Hey man. I don’t know if you know what this is, but it ain’t that.' I f****d up.
I thought Squidward played the cello. He don’t. That’s a flute. I f****d up.
But it do sound good.
There was a lot to unpack.
He tried to fix it. He made it worse. For anyone still confused, here's a guide:
Cellos.
Flutes.
Clarinets (ft. Squidward)
On Sunday morning Lil Yachty posted this:
He's not wrong though. This is a good track.
