Lady Gaga is known for being a supporter of LGBTQ+ rights, but it's easy to forget how monumental her allyship was in the early days of her career.
In 2009, when even Barack Obama still opposed same-sex marriage, Gaga attended the National Equality March and demanded action from the administration.
Around this time, there was a persistent rumour around Lady Gaga's genitals. And because 10 years can make all the difference, this was something that was perceived to be an acceptable line of questioning in multiple interviews, with publications even publishing breakdowns of the "evidence". Pretty gross.
One such instance took place on CBS's 60 Minutes Overtime, when Gaga was inexplicably asked by journalist Anderson Cooper about "a rumour that you had a male appendage, that you were a hermaphrodite".
To which she replied, while sucking on a diamond because because why not:
Maybe I do. Would it be so terrible?
Why the hell am I going to waste my time and give a press release about whether or not I have a penis? My fans don't care and neither do I.
This clip was tweeted by a fan account yesterday as proof of Gaga's enduring support of trans people.
remember when everybody thought @ladygaga had a penis and instead of denying this she just said this https://t.co/7I72h699nc— Gaga Daily (@Gaga Daily) 1586611801
It was immediately liked and retweeted tens of thousands of times, and people were very much here for some vintage woke Gaga content.
@gagadaily @ladygaga gaga really said trans rights— dawniee 🌸🌈☁️ (@dawniee 🌸🌈☁️) 1586635761
It's worth noting that throughout the rumours Gaga responded in a number of different ways, saying her "beautiful vagina is very offended" by the suggestion that she had a penis, and later leaning into the rumours and even confirming them for shock value.
Love you Japan! Pokerface just went #1! Thanku!!. My show was so good last night. I just had to go home and suck my own hermie dick, suckka— Lady Gaga (@Lady Gaga) 1249692127
Still, it seems her totally unbothered attitude towards persistent rumours about her genitalia was before its time, and in an era where transphobia is rife, we could stand to learn a lot from 2010 Gaga.
