John Mulaney claims the Secret Service ‘opened a file’ on him for making a joke about Trump

Comedian John Mulaney just revealed that he had been investigated by the Secret Service, something not many comedians usually have to deal with.

Speaking on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Tuesday, Mulaney recounted a joke he made while hostingSaturday Night Live back in February, which the Secret Service apparently did not find funny.

At the time, the Emmy-winner made a leap year joke (the show took place on leap day) about how Julius Caesar turned into such a "powerful maniac" that he was stabbed to death by senators. "That would be an interesting thing if we brought that back now," he joked, referring to the president.

He explained that the Service later called to inform him that they'd opened an investigation into him over the comments.

"I guess they opened a file on me because of the joke," he told Kimmel. “And I have to say: Am I stoked there’s a file open on me? Absolutely. Did I enjoy it in the moment? Not so much.”

Mulaney also said that the agent who contacted him seemed to have an understanding that his comments were just part of a comedy set:

"In terms of risk assessment, no one who’s ever looked at me thought I registered above a 1," he said. Fans thought the story was ‘hilarious’, calling it “The most 2020 event of 2020”.

“The fact that @mulaney was on the secret service watch list for making jokes about tr*mp is the funniest thing to happen in 2020,” one person wrote on Twitter.

After he was cleared, Mulaney ironically ended up having to relocate to Washington DC for a year:

"I failed to realize that after telling the Secret Service that they had nothing else to worry about, I had leased an apartment for one year in Washington, D.C.," he joked. "And that apartment was across the street from the Secret Service building. So, it had a planned vibe to it."
