JK Rowling has made a new apology for one of the Battle of Hogwarts deaths

Spoiler-tastic news to follow if you somehow still haven't read or watched Harry Potter

May 2nd is the anniversary of the Battle of Hogwarts, a day the wizarding world of Harry Potter celebrates the final defeat of Lord Voldemort.

For muggles, today has also become a tradition, when creator JK Rowling apologises for another death of a beloved character. Last year it was the turn of Fred Weasley.

On Twitter this morning the author chose to say sorry for killing off the werewolf Remus Lupin (played by David Thewlis, for those of us who just watched the films.)

Once again, it's the anniversary of the Battle of Hogwarts so, as promised, I shall apologise for a death. This year: Remus Lupin.

Wracked with guilt, Rowling also made a confession:

In the interests of total honesty I'd also like to confess that I didn't decide to kill Lupin until I wrote Order of the Phoenix.

She also admitted that his death had been chosen to balance out the survival of other much loved characters, like Arthur Weasley.

Arthur lived, so Lupin had to die. I'm sorry. I didn't enjoy doing it. The only time my editor ever saw me cry was over the fate of Teddy [Lupin's son].

Power mad with her cosmic chopping block, at least she showed some remorse for young Teddy Lupin. Some fans were forgiving. Others were less so.

RIP, Lupin.
