Cynical comments about young women and their appearances are unfortunately nothing new, even for supermodels.
Bella Hadid posed in a blue bikini for a series of makeup-free Instagram photos on Monday. Highlighting her heritage, she wrote in the caption, “Palestinian and Dutch.”
While the post received more than 2.5 million likes, one follower commented, “you look so tired.”
The 24-year-old model wasted no time in sarcastically responding.
“I…..was…..and just woke up….,” Hadid replied, along with a couple of sad-looking emojis. “I am…sorry that my bags…offend u.”
The fan seemed to immediately backtrack: “@bellahadid I’m screaming! Did my best girl just reply me?! Plus hey, you are so gorgeous! Your eye bags are a work of art,” they wrote.
Other celebrities were certainly way less harsh on the photo:
“YUP,” wrote her sister Gigi Hadid, while their mom Yolanda Hadid added a heart emoji in the comments.
“It’s like looking in a mirror,” actress Selma Blair joked, along with a shrugging emoji.
This is not the first time Hadid has responded to body-shamers. In 2018, she was criticised for appearing too thin on social media.
In light of the negative reaction at the time, Hadid updated the caption to say: “All body types are different and react differently to a great workout routine and a healthy diet."
