More people visited the Louvre, and the most popular exhibition was in the National Palace Museum in Taipei, but the most searched for global museum online last year was London's Science Museum.
The Science Museum had 3.3 million visitors last year, making it the sixth most visited museum in the country - but its draw online made it the most looked up museum in the world.
Director of the Science Museum, Ian Blatchford, said in a statement, "It's fantastic that so many people across world are seeking out the Science Museum, and this new data provides yet more evidence of the world class status of British museums."
Google's analysis of global searches for the world's museums over the past year found it was a hat trick of London sites at the top, with the Natural History Museum and the British Museum coming in second and third.
London was also the most searched for city in the world on Google for art galleries, theatres and museums, and the most searched for city to visit overall.
Mayor of London Boris Johnson said the new research by Google in collaboration with London & Partner proves London is "without a doubt the cultural capital of the world".
The five most searched for museums for 2014:
1. Science Museum, London
2. Natural History Museum, London
3. British Museum, London
4. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York
5. Smithsonian Institution, Washington D.C.
