Real female computer engineers improve Barbie's computer engineer book

The Barbie I Can Be A Computer Engineer book has been widely criticised, on the grounds that it is sexist and not about computer engineering. In the book Barbie is a games designer rather than a programmer and needs boys to help her code.

Now actual computer engineers are trying to fix that. Computing PhD student Casey Fiesler has "remixed" the book while Kathleen Tuite has made Feminist Hacker Barbie, which allows users to add their own captions to pages in the book. People have then been tweeting them under the hashtag #feministhackerbarbie. These are some of our favourites:

Mattel, the company that makes Barbie, has apologised for any offence saying of the book, which was published in 2010: "The portrayal of Barbie in this specific story doesn’t reflect the brand’s vision for what Barbie stands for", they said in a statement. "We believe girls should be empowered to understand that anything is possible and believe they live in a world without limits. We apologise that this book didn’t reflect that belief."

The page in which you can buy the book on Amazon is currently unavailable and TechCrunch are reporting it has been pulled by the company. i100.co.uk has asked Amazon for clarification.
