Everything you need to know about Apple's nightmare week

Apple isn't having the best of times right now. Here's what's gone wrong, but also why things aren't quite as bad as they seem.

This week reports emerged of people who bought the new iPhone 6 Plus, with its 5.5in screen, complaining the smartphone was bending in their pockets.

Tests conducted in non-laboratory conditions have revealed that the phone does appear to bend far too easily when pressure is applied.

As the bendable iPhone 6 Plus reports emerged, Apple was also forced to pull its latest mobile operating system from the App Store.

iOS 8.0.1 was meant to fix minor flaws in the software but in fact all it did was to introduce several major ones; automatically ending calls and disabling Touch ID on the iPhone 5S, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.

Counterpoint: There isn't really one this time. The mea culpa over iOS 8.0.1 is understood to be the first time Apple has withdrawn a software upgrade.

The problems come after Apple and U2 were humiliated by the response to the band's latest album, Songs of Innocence, being automatically added to iTunes libraries as a free download. Far from appreciating the gesture, U2 fans and non-fans alike were angered at having the music forced upon them, leading Apple to issue a guide on how people could remove the album.

With all that said, Apple still has reason to celebrate. The launch of its latest generation of smartphones has been beset with problems, but it still enjoyed its best-ever opening weekend for sales.
