Elon Musk's awkward year just keeps getting more and more embarrassing.

First, he started dating a pop star, then he got into weird Twitter arguments and even tried to claim that he had invented the subway system.

Now, to top it all off, he is releasing his own brand of tequila, which is 'the' most mid-life crisis thing we've ever heard.

Oh, and it gets worst. The name of this alcohol is, wait for it...'Teslaquila.'

Honestly, you couldn't make this stuff up.

This news was broken by CNBC on Friday after it was reported that Tesla filed a patent application for 'Teslaquila' on Monday.

This was later confirmed by Musk on Twitter, who even shared a picture of what appears to be a prototype bottle of the alcoholic beverage.

Quite why a car company would want to be associated with such a strong liquor is a little puzzling but, judging by most of Musk's activities this year, we can hardly call it surprising.

There is a bit more to this story as Tesla and Musk seem to have had plans for this for quite a few months.

Back on 1 April, Teslaquila was mentioned in a April Fool's prank by Musk on Twitter, who joked that Tesla was going bankrupt and he had been found passed out surrounded by bottles of the spirit.

CNBC also reports that Tesla applied for the trademark back in April in Jamaica and is now seeking a US priority date based on that application.

There is no known schedule for when or if Teslaquila will be released but, if it does see the light of day, we hope the launch party is soundtracked by this classic:
