Does anyone actually like Facebook messenger?

Facebook messenger now has 500 million monthly users, the site announced yesterday - no mean feat.

The standalone mobile app, released in 2011, allows users to send private messages to their friends. It became compulsory for Facebook mobile users wishing to send private messages in August 2014.

As the Register point out, messenger's 500 million monthly users are less impressive when compared to Facebook's monthly active mobile users, a whopping 1.12bn in September 2014 according to Facebook's own figures.

Facebook themselves say there is more work to be done with Peter Martinazzi, Director of Product Management, saying: "This is an exciting milestone but with a half billion people relying on Messenger to communicate and connect, it is also a reminder that there is so much left for us to do."
