The World Cup is turning out to be a monumental competition for England, who qualified for the quarter finals.

And impassioned football talk has migrated to social media, with hundreds of thousands of fans tweeting before, during and after each match.

In the age of gifs and memes, some of these are hilarious.

Throughout the tournament, Twitter UK has been analysing data to identify the biggest tweets based on the number of retweets in the UK.

The social media platform is hosting Golden Tweet awards: the fan, player, team, brand and pundit to receive the most retweets will be presented with a trophy featuring a golden Twitter bird.

Here are some of the most popular tweets about the World Cup currently in contention for the coveted prize:

Dara Nasr, managing director at Twitter UK said:

If Dier’s winning penalty vs. Columbia sparking 127,000 tweets per minute wasn't enough, mentions of ‘It's coming home’ are up to 1.4 million compared to 5000 in 2014. #WorldCup fever is well and truly in full swing.

We're really excited to celebrate this by launching Golden Tweet for the first time, with the five categories showcasing the range of voices shaping football conversation on Twitter this summer.

Winners will be announced after the final on 15 July.
