WhatsApp will be blocked on millions of phones next week, affecting both iPhone and Android users.

“WhatsApp will no longer support Android phones running OS 4.0.4 and older on November 1, 2021,” WhatsApp’s FAQ page reads.

The FAQ goes on to address iPhone users, stating that the app now requires iOS 10 or newer.

After November1, WhatsApp will be blocked on devices that have not been updated, as the devices can no longer support the app.

iPhones that cannot be updated past iOS 10 include:

  • iPhone 4S
  • iPhone SE
  • iPhone 6S

Androids that cannot be updated past OS 4.0.4 include:

  • Samsung Galaxy Trend Lite
  • Galaxy Trend II
  • Galaxy SII
  • Galaxy S3 Mini
  • Galaxy Xcover2
  • Galaxy Core
  • Galaxy Ace 2
  • Sony Xperia Miro
  • Sony Xperia Neo L
  • Xperia Arc 5.

A complete list of phones can be found on the WhatsApp FAQ page. LG, Alcatel, ZTE, HTC, Lenovo, Huawei are also affected.

Users that the choice to either purchase a brand new device or update their operating systems. If a new device cannot be purchased, WhatsApp recommends that all users save their chat histories so they will not be lost after the app can no longer function.

Once November 1 rolls around, the app will gradually stop updating and eventually be rendered useless.
