He might be in charge of the country’s finances but the deficit isn’t the only thing George Osborne has managed to cut down on.
The chancellor, 44, stepped out looking slim at the Conservative Party conference ahead of his big day today.
While Mr Osborne takes the plunge at the podium to explain the country’s figures, many eyes will be on his markedly svelte one, a result of a fitness regime that began in February this year.
Insiders say Mr Osborne has lost as much as 20lb on the diet - and the chancellor's Peter Pan Pixie haircut only served to emphasise his dramatic weight loss.
Some commentators, however, suggested his personal austerity measures may have too far - with one Twitter user noting Mr Osborne looked too thin.
It certainly seems a long time since he was pictured eating a burger ahead of his 2013 Budget.
The chancellor, however, seemed impervious to such criticism, flaunting his slimmer look in a racy figure-hugging suit as he toured TV studios ahead of his big speech.
