A London restaurant owner who went viral after he decided to add anti-Brexit messages to his receipts has said he's received death threats from Leave voters in the days since.
Ibrahim Dogus, who last week decided to add a pro-Remain message to recipts for meals at his restaurant Westminster Kitchen, said he'd received abusive phone calls, negative reviews, and threats of violence since the recipt went viral, reports iNews.
Last week, a Twitter user went viral after they posted a picture of the pro-Remain receipt to their account. Along with the picture, they wrote:
Love it
At the bottom of the receipt, the pro-Remain missive can be seen. It says:
Brexit is bad. Immigrants make Britain great. They also cooked and served your food today.
Speaking to iNews about the abuse he's received since he released the receipt, he said:
We have been receiving abuse and threats on social media and via phone calls to our restaurant.
We have been targeted by far right groups who are organised on social media and [it seems like they have been] encouraging each other to attack our business by leaving fake reviews on TripAdvisor, Google Business, and Facebook.
It has been a horrible few days and our staff feel worried about what’s happening.
On the company's Facebook page, there are now a number of offensive reviews.
One wrote:
awful food, awful staff very rude and food was cold I shall never be back neither will any of our guests who ordered, steak was like rubber
Another added:
I'd rather not drink immigrant p***, thanks
In light of the abusive messages, Dougus has been forced to contact the Met Police after worrying for the safety of himself and his staff.
Our manager, Maliq Konjuhi, said that he is worried that someone will come and physically attack our premises.
When they call they are verbally abusive and sound very violent.
Each time they call they say they want to book a table under the name of Tommy Robinson and then they start using abusive language.
I have reported to the police and an officer will be visiting us soon. We are not removing the message. The message will stay on the bills until 1 February and then we will replace with a different message.
indy100 has contacted the Met Police for comment.
