After months of serious discussion about how to get people engaged in politics, Twitter users have stumbled on the perfect formula - and just in time for tonight's seven-way general election debate between political party leaders.

While the #leadersdebate hashtag is being used by many, some Twitter users have embraced a racier alternative - #massdebate.

On the very remote chance that you might be missing the joke here, say the hashtag out loud and all will be revealed.

Although clearly deliberate, the hashtag does recall Susan Boyle’s social media team unwisely using #susanalbumparty to promote the launch of her new record – or Penguin’s comms team using #yourmum to encourage people to share stories about their mothers on Mother’s Day.

Twitter, you cannot be tamed.
