Five most common ways cheaters communicate with the person they're cheating with

Regardless of who does it or the circumstances surrounding it, cheating is still cheating and it is not cool.

Perhaps the worst part about a cheating partner is catching them in the act.

Discreetly chatting via a smartphone or private social media thread is an ideal way for someone to organise their cheating, but which is the most popular method?

The infamous dating website Ashley Madison, which specialises in affairs, conducted a survey of 1,500 of its members and asked them how they communicate with the person they are cheating with.

These are the five most common methods from the results.

Smartphone

By a landslide, the most common way cheaters communicate with each other is through their phones.

56 percent of people who took part in the survey listed phones as the primary tool for connecting to the other person.

This seems like a lot of work, as they would probably have to turn off nearly all of their notifications to avoid detection.

Relationship coach Chris Armstrong told Bustle:

One clue is that their cell phone will be glued to their hands and their text and call history will always be clean.

Email

In second place was good old email.

40 per cent of those who participated said they'd used email as a route of communication.

Once again though this seems precarious, as the cheater would have to make sure that their emails are always closed, and maybe even hidden behind a password.

In addition, they would have to make sure that they didn't CC anyone else in or forward the illicit messages.

Dating websites

Considering that Ashley Madison, which is a dating site of sorts, conducted this survey, we're surprised this method didn't feature higher.

Dating sites were used by 20 per cent of those that took part in the study, which is still a fairly high number.

The one advantage to this is that there are so many dating sites out there now it would be difficult for your partner to find you.

Social Media

This method seems rife with problems as one of the primary tools of social media is to share information and talk to people.

Still, 18 per cent of those surveyed said they'd used social media as a way of talking with the person they are cheating with. That's a lot of DM sliding.

Secret phone

This is probably the most expensive option, but having a second or a secret phone was suggested by 11 percent of the poll.

Hiding that device from your partner sounds like a lot of effort and stress.
